Dr. Bryce Rutter to Present “Designing the Perfect Surgical Instrument” at MD&M East Conference
Internationally recognized ergonomic designer to also serve on usability panel

ST. LOUIS, MO (May 30, 2017) — Dr. Bryce Rutter, founder and CEO of St. Louis-based Metaphase Design Group, will present Designing the Perfect Surgical Instrument on June 13 at MD&M East, the largest medical technology event on the east coast.  He will also serve on the conference panel, What Does Usability Mean Today?

“MD&M East is an important conference for medical device companies and their research and development staff,” said Rutter.  “I’m really pleased to offer my experience and expertise in medical device design to the conference participants. And I’m eager to hear about trends and insights from the engineers and scientists that specialize in medical device development.”

During Rutter’s presentation, part of the user-centered design track, he will analyze the surgeon’s needs for dexterity, control and precision; discuss how size, form, weight, balance, materials and textures impact human performance and ergonomic design; and examine methods to employ a user-centered design strategy to improve device design. This will be held in room 1E07 from 10:45am to 11:15am EST.

The usability panel, also part of the user-centered design track, will be moderated by Stephen Wilcox, principal of Design Science. Fellow panelists include Michael Wiklund, general manager of human factors engineering at UL LLC acquired by Wiklund R&D and Carmen Chacon, senior human factors and industrial designer at StarFish Medical. The panelists will explore how new consumer technologies changed the standard of usability for medical products, how the evolving needs of patients and clinicians are impacting the way designers approach usability, and what the biggest usability challenges medical device designers face. This will be held in room 1E07 from 8:30am to 9:10am EST

“Dr. Rutter is a compelling thought leader on medical device design innovation and the integration of research, ergonomics and design into new product development,” said Laurie Lehmann, senior conference producer at UBM Canon Conferences. “We’re pleased to have him on our faculty.”

The 34th annual MD&M East conference connects thousands of engineers, executives and leading suppliers all in one spot. For more information on the show, visit mdmeast.mddionline.com.
